Ongoing measures at session

We are always committed to maintaining a safe donation environment at our blood donation sessions. In relation to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, although national restrictions have been lifted, there are still some measures in place to ensure that donating is safe for everyone. These are being regularly reviewed.  

These measures help keep staff and donors safe and prevent disruptions to operations so that we can continue to save and improve lives.

What precautions are being used at session?

Our teams are trained in thorough universal hygiene precautions to prevent the spread of all infections. These include regular handwashing, wiping down donor-touched areas, using sterile collection sets for every donation, and preparing the arm with an aseptic cleanser. We have handwashing stations and hand gels on session, with supporting posters.  

We’re constantly reviewing the latest information and putting in place measures where needed. Safety is always our number one priority.

When can I donate after having COVID-19?  

7 days after your symptoms have resolved.

Some individuals may have a mild cough, or reduced sense of smell or taste, for some weeks after resolution of their infection but they can be considered as recovered for the purposes of blood and component donation.

The common reasons donors should check if they can give blood are:

  • if you are receiving medical or hospital treatment
  • if you are taking medication
  • after travelling outside of the UK
  • after having a tattoo or piercing
  • during and after pregnancy
  • if you feel ill
  • if you have cancer
  • after receiving blood, blood products or organs

Safety is always our priority
Is it safe to donate?

We screen donors to make sure they are fit and healthy. If you feel unwell or have a fever on the day, please stay at home and rebook your appointment for another day.

We’re asking donors to keep donating as normal. Regular donation is always essential, to make sure patients continue to get the donations they need. Donation is as safe as possible.  

Each donation is tested using range of screening tests in our laboratories which check for infections to help ensure that each donation is as safe as possible to transfuse to patients.

Do I need to wear a face covering?  

You no longer need to wear a face covering when giving blood.

Wearing a face covering will be optional, based on personal preference.  

This is in line with the latest NHS Infection Prevention Control guidelines.

When can I donate after having a COVID-19 vaccine? 

48 hours after receiving the vaccine (you can attend on the 3rd day from the date of your vaccine). 

It is ok to donate before having the vaccine.
