We understand this can seem confusing. We aim to collect the right amount of blood to meet hospital demand and ensure patients receive the blood they need, when they need it.
Our appeals are often aimed at specific blood groups or donor groups where we need more donations, such as O negative, B negative or Ro blood, rather than all donors.
Appointment availability can also vary by location. Some community sessions may be fully booked, while appointments are still available at other venues, particularly our donor centres, which generally have greater capacity and availability.
In some cases, appeals are designed to encourage donors to book future appointments rather than donate immediately. Blood has a limited shelf life, so we carefully manage appointments and collections throughout the year to maintain a steady supply for hospitals.
If appointments near you are currently full, that's often a sign that enough donors are booked for that session. It's worth checking appointment availability regularly, as appointments can become available when other donors cancel.
Whatever your blood type, every donation is valued and helps save and improve lives.
